Oxfam UNIte Conference: an arena for new ideas

Oxfam University group members from around Australia joined forces at a three day conference in Sydney last week.

Students came from as far as Perth and Brisbane to share their success stories from past events and to brainstorm ideas for campaigns and events in 2013. The university groups work alongside Oxfam Australia to achieve their vision of a just world without poverty.

15-year-old nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Pakistani schoolgirl and campaigner for girls' education, Malala Yousafzai, could become the youngest person ever to receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

The 15-year-old was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman who boarded her school bus on October 9, 2012. She was targeted because she had spoken out about her right to an education.

Dumpster diving: getting my hands dirty

The dumpster was a goldmine of baked goods: cheese and bacon rolls, apple scrolls, hot cross buns, and mini pizzas. We stocked up. The next day, I had the apple scroll for breakfast, with grilled plums (retrieved from the following bin) and a wedge of blue cheese.

The next bin gave us panini di casa (with an expiry date a week later), pita bread and fruit and vegetables – the plums, potatoes, cucumbers, and onions were plentiful. Lunch was panini, accompanied by the carrots from the first bin, which I'd roasted with thyme, honey, and balsamic vinegar.

Wheelies Week: Samuel is cycling through Schoolies Week to raise money for Oxfam

Those of us with only very blurry memories of our own Schoolies Week are in awe of 18-year-old Samuel Anderson, a keen cyclist who's in Year 12 at Toowoomba Grammar School in Queensland.

He's graduating soon but instead of hitting the beach and booze for Schoolies Week, he's hitting the saddle to raise money for the West African Food Crisis in a week-long challenge he's dubbed Wheelies Week.

The ten winners of the BackMeUp anti-cyberbullying competition have created a 30 second commercial at their film making workshop in Sydney. Two of the winners – Paige and Eloise from South Australia said “It is surreal the way we have got along with each other during this amazing journey no-matter what our experience of film and acting is or where we are from or how old we are we are all entirely supportive of everyone’s decisions, ideas and inputs.”
